Today’s post is from Cathe at Davis Library:
The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein
I was drawn in by the title, and by the picture of the yellow Lab on the cover of this novel, but didn’t know how important that Lab would turn out to be–he is the narrator! Enzo, nearing the end of his life with his owner, Denny, tells their story. Denny is an aspiring race-car driver, married to Eve, and father of Zoe. Enzo understands conversation perfectly (from years of watching television while he is at home alone), longs for opposable thumbs and to be able to speak to the family he loves. Together, Enzo and Denny face several personal challenges and considerable sadness, but Enzo’s gentle, philosophical approach to life guides them both. Garth Stein captures Enzo’s funny, endearing canine voice perfectly in this unusual novel.
