The Cheese Nun: Sister Noella’s Voyage of Discovery (2006) directed by Pat Thompson
If you love cheese or love interesting careers this documentary is for you. In 1970 Martha Marcellino visited the Benedictine Abbey of Regina Laudis in Connecticut for a weekend retreat. Thirty years later as Mother Noella Marcellino, she is a world renowned authority on the making of artisanal cheese. After joining the cloistered convent , Sister Noella learned to milk cows and ultimately was asked to become the convent cheesemaker. A crash course on cheesemaking from a French woman was all the preparation Mother Noella received. Within a year Mother Noella’s Bethlehem cheese was the equal of its French cousins. The intrepid Mother Noella later earns a doctorate in microbiology. Mother Noella’s engaging personality and professional qualifications have earned her renown the world over. She has earned scientific awards for her work in France and is a leading spokesperson for biodiversity in cheese and artisanal cheesemaking.
