Today’s post is from June at Schimelpfenig Library:
Downfall (2005) directed by Oliver Hirschbiegel
Downfall was an Academy Award nominee for best foreign film and a winner of several other prestigious film awards.
The movie chronicles the events which occurred in Hitler’s bunker during April 1945 as they were seen through the eyes of Hitler’s secretary, Traudl Junge.
Bruno Ganz is superb as Hitler. His physical appearance and portrayal of Hitler’s manaical personality is mesmerizing.
Especially chilling is the portrayal of Magda Goebbels who, in the final days, makes preparations to kill her children rather than have them face life without Hitler’s leadership or live under the impending Soviet oppression.
German with English subtitles.
