Awake My Soul: The Story of the Sacred Harp (2008) directed by Matt Hinton & Erica Hinton

Anyone who saw the movie “Cold Mountain” had the privilege of hearing, perhaps for the first time, the haunting sound of sacred harp singing.  This documentary traces the history of this form of a capella singing which is also referred to as shape note singing.  The sacred harp is one’s own voice, and the use of it has deep roots in the Southern United States.

I have viewed this movie twice and was drawn both times to a sound that I will never forget.  I do not think other viewers will either.

If you are interested in learning more about sacred harp music www.fasola.org is an excellent source for more information.
